Amber on Seamless White

There is nothing like shooting on a white seamless background. It makes the subject just pop in both color and BW.

The key to using this background is making sure that your background light does not bounce back and hit your subject. I used flags to make sure the light did not contaminate the subject. I also made sure she was about 10 feet from the background. Lastly, I used a shoot-through umbrella as my key light.

The images came out like we wanted and we had a great time. Take a look at the pictures of Amber Plaster, an up and coming model.

Fine Art Stock Imagery

I'm in the process of creating a collection of stock photography that I will sell on iStock and a few other stock photography houses. Take a look at a few of my images. I hope you enjoy them as much as I had taking them.

La Puente Judo Dojo Portraits

Ok, so my original idea was to capture the judo members in one of their stances or throwing someone. Something dramatic and action packed, BUT at the end the parents really wanted portraits, so we went that route. I still wanted to put some edge on the pictures, so I used a background light to create a background glow and hit them with one strobe on a shoot through umbrella to create dramatic light. The setup worked like a charm.

When I delivered the pictures Sensei Gomez and the parents were really happy. Next year I am going with my original idea... I think capturing them in action would be a perfect way to get a sense of what they do and how they do it.

Here are some pictures from that session. Enjoy!

Portraits of Workman Football

Last week I had the opportunity to shot my high school alma mater's freshman football team and it was awesome.

I met with Coach Jimenez about what he was looking for and we decided on creating some images that would define the season. Images that would reflect the state of mind of his team.

This is is a hardcore team that will be playing some smash mouth football, so the concept behind the shoot was to create images that were dark, gritty and just made these 14 year olds look hella tough. The mission was accomplished.

The coach thought the images rocked, the kids will too and I felt good that I was giving back to my old high school.

Check out a sample of the images that will help define this up and coming team.

Welcome to world Orlando Emilio Luna

Last week my sister gave light to her first child, Orlando Emilio Luna. She had a long delivery, but at the end an amazing little boy was born.

We are extremely happy for my sister, Margarita, and my brother-in-law, Orlando, because Emilio is going to add amazing experiences to their lives. They are going to be great parents because they are going to be present, attentive and actively engaged with Emilio. With that and their love for him, Emilio has it made.

Congratulations Margarita and Orlando. Welcome to the world of parenthood!

Here are some pictures I took after Emilio was born. Enjoy!

eSolar's Sierra Solar Farm Launches

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to cover the launch of eSolar's first solar farm, Sierra, in Lancaster, CA. This solar farm is the first of it's kind in the nation and will create enough green energy to light over 4000 homes. eSolar has several other arrays in the works in the southwest and overseas, which will make its impact far and wide.

The event went off without a hitch and was a great success. Here are some images from the event. Check out the array... it's purely amazing!

Folklorico | Traditions

Last week I had the great opportunity to photograph Sienah Pablo, a young folklorico dancer from Folklorico Popurri Dance Company. Sienah is an enthusiastic and hard working dancer that loves to dance folklorico.

Her mom mentioned that she practices four days a week and performs on the weekends. It's a great commitment on Sienah's part, but also for her mom, as she is the one that takes her to practices and competitions. I commend her mother, Cinthya, on her commitment and for passing along her families culture and dance traditions.

I uploaded a few pictures from our session for your viewing pleasure. I was playing around with some photoshop techniques to give the images somewhat of a vintage look. They remind me of some old Mexican films we used to watch as a child.

I hope you enjoy them.

Embracing turning 60

Last week my mom turned 60 and while many people see this milestone as a low point in their lives, my mother has embraced it and is running with it. She is loving, kind, giving and purely amazing.

In these 60 years she has won several bouts with cancer, serious back injuries and other events that would have turned the average person into a pessimist. The amazing thing about her is that those events have just solidified her faith and belief that there is always a silver lining in the challenges in our lives.

She taught me the definition of determination, humility, courage and the power of love. Without her I would not be the man I am today.

Happy birthday mom and thank you for being the amazing person your are.

I took some pictures of her this past weekend at her Birthday picnic. I love these sun drenched pictures of her. She looks amazing.

Twitter for small businesses

Twitter is no longer just for the Big Dogs with big ad $$ and multi-platform marketing strategies, mom and pop shops with little or no ad $$ are taking it by storm, and gaining value and a following. Bill Gross, founder of Idealab, recently said that in this down economy we need to lead with innovation in order to grow. Twitter is one of those innovations that makes getting the word out quick and easy.

Twitter is changing the way small businesses interact with their clients and attract them. Twitter is creating a new marketing paradigm for small businesses in that it is allowing them to touch thousands of potential clients without the need for deep pockets or elaborate marketing schemes.

I have to be honest, I didn't "get" twitter at first. However, it didn't take me long to understand the great potency that Twitter offers me as a wedding and portrait photographer. There is great value in being able to reach out to current and potential clients in an instant. I use twitter for two main things. One, I like to share information about my current projects or blog updates. And two I think it's become a great way for me to get the word out about promotions and referral bonuses that I might be running at the time. It serves as PR, marketing and as a sales vehicle. I am definitely not the first photographer in Los Angeles, to use Twitter to connect with their base, but it's amazing how many don't.

Innovation and creative problem solving will be the keys to success in this down economy, so I am looking to use all available means to reach out to my clients to show them the value in my work will bring to their lives and also to give them a glimpse into my life because at the end of the day I am just a man, a son, a father and a husband, just like the them or the men in their lives.

Amy + Chad | Wedding 06.20.09

Last month I had the great pleasure of working with a talented photographer, Katya Williams, of Katya Williams Photography.

I second shot for her (something I rarely do), but it gave me a great respect for second shooters and the hard work they put into each event. Much respect to all the second shooters out there.

We captured intimate moments and a lot of the fun that Amy and Chad had on their wedding day. They were fun loving and their reception was off the hook!

Here is a sample of the photography that I captured for Katya and the lucky couple. Enjoy!

Kerv+Sona's Wedding | 6.21.09

A couple of weeks ago, I had the great pleasure of photographing the wedding of two of the nicest, most humble and deeply in love couples I've photographed to date. Kerv and Sona's amazing wedding was situated at the exclusive Altadena Town and County Club in Altadena, CA.

When I have the opportunity to photograph weddings like theirs, it makes me smile and think back at how punch drunk in love Vanessa and I were on our wedding day and continue to be with every moment we have together. Got to love it.

Here is a sample of their images. I hope they make you go home and give a little love to your significant other.

Fireworks baby!

I just had to post these two pictures from the La Puente firework Show that we attended on the Fourth of July.

The show wasn't as good as the past few years, but we had a great time with the girls. Sienna didn't appreciate the fireworks, but Tessa had an expression of awe all the way through the show. It was awesome to see her face.

Next year I'll post them sooner.
